Every Sunday since 1872 people of all faiths and of every political persuasion have gathered at Speakers’ Corner in London’s Hyde Park to debate, or just preach, their views in public. Karl Marx, Lenin, Marcus Garvey and George Orwell have all spoken here through the years. Some groups, for example the Socialist party of Great Britain, have held regular meetings on this spot for over a hundred years. The area also attracts a multitude of faith groups from Orthodox Jews to Fundamentalist Muslims, all of whom manage to share the space in a mainly peaceful co-existence.
In this ongoing project John Gladdy is attempting to capture the diversity and energy that continues to make Speakers’ Corner so unique.
